The Emerald Cut Altitude:
1,100m to 1, 250m
A traditional Boquete coffee, The
Emerald Cut grows on the slopes of the Barú volcano, in rich volcanic
soils, in the area known as Palmira. This coffee is almost entirely of the
Catuai varietal, and comprises approximately 70% of our crop. With a medium body and medium acidity, notes
of nuts, chocolate and vanilla glimmer through.
The Emerald Cut covers the areas we
refer to as Santa Maria, Aguacate, Louvain and The Thatcher and is what
sustains close to one thousand Ngobe-Bugle pickers during harvest. The
Ngobe-Bugle's are a nomad group, migrating to the highlands during harvest
(November through February). The nursery, with child care, is the center
hub, from where pickers go to harvest and are able to leave their children
cared for with food, teachers and supplies. This may seem unusual to
mention, but on most farms in Panama the Ngobe-Bugles do not have this
option, and either take their infants with them and hang them from a tree
in a make-shift cradle, under sun and rain while they harvest, or, if they
are toddlers, lock them in the housing quarters (sometimes tied so they
won't hurt themselves). Doctors and dentists come on medical tours to
improve the health of the people. Rice and beans are given to the families
regularly to ensure proper nutrition for the pickers themselves. The
children (and many times adults) are deparasitised. All children of school
age are strongly encouraged to attend nearby schools. This is the
epicenter of our social program.
